Caterpillar Celebrates 100 Years of Innovation and Global Leadership

The company’s origins trace back to 1925, when the Holt Manufacturing Company merged with C.L. Best Tractor Co. to create what was then called Caterpillar Tractor Co. From its earliest days producing track-type tractors to pull combine harvesters in California’s agricultural fields, Caterpillar has grown into a cornerstone of the global construction and mining sectors. Its machinery has powered infrastructure development on nearly every continent, including highways, dams, and urban megaprojects.

At Caterpillar’s global headquarters, descendants of founders Benjamin Holt and C.L. Best joined executives and employees to reflect on the company’s impact over the past century. Caterpillar Chairman and CEO Jim Umpleby remarked that the company’s enduring success has been built on the dedication of its workforce, the trust of its customers, and the strength of its dealer network. “I’m proud to lead such a resilient team,” he said, expressing confidence that Caterpillar will remain at the forefront of sustainability and innovation in the next century.

The mining industry, a key segment for Caterpillar, has been a cornerstone of the company’s operations for decades. Caterpillar equipment dominates the sector, providing nearly 50% of the large mining trucks in use globally. With over 5,000 autonomous mining trucks operating at customer sites, Caterpillar also leads the charge in automation. These vehicles, used in locations ranging from Australia to Canada, have collectively hauled more than 6 billion metric tons of material as part of the company’s investment in advancing safety and operational efficiency. According to its 2023 financial report, Caterpillar generated $67.1 billion in revenue, with mining equipment representing a significant share of the company’s growth trajectory.

Celebrations for the anniversary year have expanded beyond Irving to Caterpillar facilities worldwide. The Centennial World Tour, launched this week, offers an interactive experience designed to engage employees, partners, and customers. Commemorative “Centennial Grey” machines, a limited-edition product line, will also be available for purchase in 2025, reflecting the company’s enduring blend of tradition and innovation.

For 100 years, Caterpillar has been integral to shaping the infrastructure of the modern world. As it enters its second century, the company continues to carry forward its reputation as the mining industry’s trusted partner and a leader in construction, energy, and transportation solutions.
