Minister of Mines Receives Report on Irregular Mining Activities in South Kivu
The Minister of Mines, Kizito Pakabomba, has officially received the report from the special commission tasked with assessing the legality and compliance of mining activities in South Kivu.
Following over two weeks of intensive work, the commission reviewed the activities of 18 companies out of 30 summoned by the ministry. The report highlights several violations of the mining code and regulations, including unqualified operators, illegal semi-industrial mining concealed under the guise of non-compliant mining cooperatives, and significant environmental concerns.
Minister Pakabomba praised the commission’s thorough work and reaffirmed his ministry’s commitment to ensuring mining practices that are sustainable, fair, and compliant with the laws of the Republic. He stated that strict and exemplary sanctions would be imposed on violators as part of the government’s effort to combat illegal mining and mineral smuggling, in line with the President’s vision for the sector.
The Minister also emphasized the importance of expanding this initiative to other provinces to clean up and strengthen governance in the mining sector.
