Ghana Assumes Control of Gold Fields’ Damang Mine After Lease Renewal Rejection

Ghana’s government has taken operational control of Gold Fields’ Damang mine after rejecting the South African mining company’s lease renewal application, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources announced Wednesday.

The ministry’s statement provided no explanation for the rejection, which affects a mine that produced approximately 144,000 ounces of gold in 2023, according to Gold Fields’ operational reports. The government takeover marks a significant development in Ghana’s increasingly assertive resource nationalism posture.

The Damang mine, located in Ghana’s Western Region, has been operated by Gold Fields since 2002, when the company acquired it as part of its merger with Normandy Mining. According to mining analyst firm S&P Global Market Intelligence, the mine contains approximately 1.08 million ounces of gold reserves with an estimated nine-year remaining life.

Gold Fields, which operates two other mines in Ghana – Tarkwa and Asanko – has not issued a formal response to the government’s action. The company derived approximately 35% of its 2023 production from its Ghanaian operations, according to its annual report.

Ghana ranks as Africa’s largest gold producer, with the sector accounting for more than 5% of GDP and 40% of export earnings, according to Ghana Chamber of Mines data. The government has recently implemented policies aimed at increasing state participation in mining ventures, including mandatory 10% free-carried interest in all mining operations.
