Kassongo Bin Nassor Takes the Helm of Congo’s Mining Chamber

Kassongo Bin Nassor, a veteran with nearly 20 years of experience in the mining industry, has been named president of the Mining Chamber of the Federation of Enterprises of the Congo (FEC). The appointment, decided at the general assembly on April 3, 2025, at the Pullman Grand Karavia Hotel in Haut-Katanga, comes as a quiet yet decisive move following the withdrawal of Cyril Mutombo, then director general of Kibali Gold Mines—a subsidiary of Barrick Gold. The selection, ratified by an impartial judicial officer, reflects a consensus among industry stakeholders.

Nassor, who currently oversees special projects at Tenke Fungurume Mining (a subsidiary of CMOC), succeeds Louis Watum. Watum, the previous president, has recently transitioned to serve as Minister of Industry under the government of Judith Suminwa.

In his acceptance speech, Nassor emphasized a renewed focus on engaging with government authorities, refining subcontracting practices, and pursuing balanced fiscal policies and environmental safeguards. His background as General Manager for external relations at TFM and a longstanding member of the ITIE-RDC executive committee since 2010 positions him as a trusted figure capable of navigating both regulatory and developmental challenges.
